Excerpt from A Voice From the South
It is because I'believe the American people to be conscientiously committedato a fair trial and ungarbled evidence, and because I feel it essential to a perfect understanding and an equitable verdict that truth from each stand point be presented at the bar, - that this little voice has been added to the already full chorus. The other side has not been represented by one who lives there. And not many can more sensibly realize and more accurately tell the weight and the fret, of the long dull pain than the open-eyed but hitherto voice less Black Woman of America.

This is one of the most powerful books that I have ever read! Anna Julia Cooper is a jewel and a gem of a black American woman scholar! Her analyses are spot-on! Her turn of the 19th century elocution and turn of phrase is only rivaled by its rich literary, historical and anthropological content! She is superb as is her book!Product details

A Voice From the South Classic Reprint Anna J Cooper 9781334920325 Books Reviews
Thank you
From the turn of the last century, Anna Julia Cooper writes with clarity and prescience about the circumstances facing African Americans. At times she seems to have a crystal ball, as she describes how events have played out into the 21st century.
Some highlights
-The concept of the deserving poor 121
- rightfully appalled at violent labor movement 122 - she considers them spoiled laborers demanding too much out of pettiness and greed
- points out the racism of the labor movement in the north 124
- links anarchy, socialism, and communism 83
- people need training and education to suit their aptitude 126 - industrial and technical schools are .more important than Greek and Latin.
- for belief in God, against agnosticism and atheism.
- Islam is bad for women
Mostly, she wants blacks to be their best and accept only the highest standards for themselves. Women should conduct themselves with virtue and dignity, and men should be worthy of women's love, trust, and acclaim.
Came in time and product was as described. Happy with purchase and seller.
I don't know who Ms. Cooper is. This is for my kid who likes inspirational books, and I thought (from a radio review) that her life story is definitely interesting.
The book itself is 6x9" and better quality soft cover book. The print size is also for best reading, in my opinion.
This is a book written by a courageous black woman in the 1890's encouraging Human Rights, better education for women and women's rights. She was an outstanding teacher and her motto was Not the boys less, but the girls more. She spoke often on the subject of improving the status of Black Women on platforms with outstanding men, such as, Frederick Douglas and W. E. B. Du bois. She is on the 32nd African-American U. S. postage stamp. Her thoughts on human rights are in every passport issued in this country. She was born in slavery but died with a PhD from the Sorbonne. She is a great inspiration to all women.
This is beautiful, touching. I cried at times. Historically important, but also good literature.
