In a squalid ancient city on the edge of a desert (based in part on the Empty Quarter in Arabia) a weary, thrill-seeking thief named Omari sets his home afire to start anew and to cover his many crimes. When the entire city is unintentionally destroyed by the flames, the cornered thief tells the displaced people a lie about a better place which only he can lead them to, across the desert. With the help of an aged, mysterious woman who knows a better place actually does exist, they set out. The desperate people must come together to fight their way through bandits, storms, epidemics, and more. As a result of Omari's involvement with Saba, a fiercely independent woman who is out to break him in the pay of a merchant whom he has offended, his life and the life of the caravan are in danger.

Omari And The People - edition by Stephen Whitfield. Literature & Fiction eBooks @ . Reviews
I really enjoyed this book. It takes place in a mysterious, ancient land and has amazing and mysterious characters. I always found myself wanting to know more and came to care about them. There are lots of strong females, and the hero, Omari, is very realistic. I would probably consider this an adventure novel as it is exciting and we see the characters travelling across the land in search of a better place and fighting bandits, but there are also elements of fantasy and romance. I think this book has a bit of everything which makes it well-rounded and will appeal to readers of many genres. I listened to the Audible audio version of this book narrated by Curt Simmons. I really enjoyed his narration. He did an excellent job with pacing, accents, and character differentiation. When I first started listening, I realized right away that I want to listen to more books he has narrated. Overall, this is a really exciting book that really takes you away and puts you in the middle of the story. I highly recommend it.
“In The Style of The Old Classic Adventure Literature.â€
In The City, located on the Sea of Providence, somewhere in the Empty Quarter of the Sahara Desert during the `13th Century, a rogue known as the Phantom Thief takes pleasure in robbing the wealthy ruling class; He lives high on his takings, as well, but has a good heart. An old woman in the square begs for food, which he buys for her when he visits the poor section. Returning to his home one night, he discovers that his wife has betrayed him, and has revealed his identity to the authorities. Burning his mansion, the fire also destroys The City. When he notices the old woman is still inside the flames, he rushes back to rescue her. Now he’s tasked with leading the survivors of The City to a fabled Paradise somewhere in the desert.
Omari was that mysterious thief, a young rogue, good with a sword and tricks, who enjoyed stealing the government’s tax money, even though he did not need it. But what, or who has chosen him to lead the exodus to the Promised Land? The handsome young rogue attracts the eye of a number of young women on the caravan, but he has fallen in love with Saba Khan, a warrior woman possessing some magic of her own, though the real magic belongs to the old woman he had saved from the fire.
This was a very interesting story, and kept my interest throughout. The characters were fascinating, the magic was brilliant, and the story telling was smooth. Truthfully, however, I felt that Omari the Phantom Thief was more interesting than Omari the caravan leader. And at times the story does slow on the journey through the desert. This novel could have been serialized in ARGOSY or ADVENTURE in the 1930’s. There is no language, and sex is kept off screen. For anyone wishing to read a family adventure classic, I can highly recommend this book to you.
I never thought of myself as an avid reader, but the cover's exotic artwork and alluring excerpt arose my curiosity; the tension, the romances, the mysteries, the climax definitely kept my attention.
As Omari's journey developed slowly into an enticing plot of unpredictable circumstances, halfway through the story, I found myself reading eagerly to keep up with its movement- It was like watching a movie.
From the first introduction of the enigmatic "Old Mother" through the introduction of the cold sensuous lover, I appreciated the author's clever depictions of Women's Power!
Omari's transformation through the desert was as puzzling as that of the "Old Mother"... (You must read it).
Although this book is far from being a self help book, it does validate life's lessons of love, betrayal, perseverance, and hope. I absolutely loved it!
Note to the author I am anxiously waiting for a sequel.
I think it's one of the beautiful things about life when people surprise you. When they are more than you ever imagined. This book embodies that beauty and tells a tale you won't forget. I highly recommend this read.
An easy read - enjoyable. Sort of a take off on the story of Moses.
I love books about redemption and this is one of my favorites. Well written and fun.
I enjoyed this unusual tale. Watching the evolving social aspects of the people. It is a moral tale, really. The addition of characters Umal and Saba were mysterious, and I found myself wanting to know more about them.
From the start of the book to the last page the story keeps you intrigued. The storyline is figurative of starting over in life, uncertainty, yet new beginnings can yield better than expected. Adventure, battles, drama, romance and mystery etc., are bottled in this story. Though "Omari" the main male character and "Umbarak" are both appealing.
It’s refreshing that the main female characters are both strong, independent, confident women. Which is interesting that as a male writer the author captures both the feminine and vulnerable sides of these influential and decisive female characters. “Old Mother†is a fascinating woman "old and strong, authoritative and mystical at the same time" she remained a mystery to the end. "Ghazala" is seen throughout the story being just like one of the boys and in command yet in the end we see her sultry side, I love the ending. Wide range of readers would enjoy this book.
